Why did the Holy Qur'an come in the rhythm of poetry? While we are stretching the Qur'anic word form our lips in a rhythm, in the same time our mind should be focusing the meanings and details. We have to train ourselves to use the same method recitation when performing prayer (salah), or making dua, or reciting the Qur'an. This is the way every Muslim should be trained in order to communicate with Allah (SWT).

arabic
O you who believe! Approach not AsSalât (the prayer) when you are in a drunken state until you know (the meaning) of what you utter, nor when you are in a state of Janâba, (i.e. in a state of sexual impurity and have not yet taken a bath) except when travelling on the road (without enough water, or just passing through a mosque), till you wash your whole body. And if you are ill, or on a journey, or one of you comes after answering the call of nature, or you have been in contact with women (by sexual relations) and you find no water, perform Tayammum with clean earth and rub therewith your faces and hands (Tayammum)[]. Truly, Allâh is Ever OftPardoning, OftForgiving. (4:43)

Drunken state also means that whatever one utters from there mouths, if someone's mind concentrates in something else, such as matters related to this world, except for Allah, or until someone does not know the meanings of what he or she  utters it is as though he or she is in a drunken state, this is our presentation in front of Allah (SWT), who knows what is in our hearts. The reason why we are thinking here and there is because we are praying robotically or as a cultural aspect, because we were born in to a Muslim family. And if we have no connection with Allah, or if we do not think about Allah then we are connected with Satan instead of Allah, and Satan tries to destroy our most important obligatory action.

What is meant to be explained to improve the performance of prayer, and not to quit because one does not know the meanings.

It is important to teach our souls about Allah, and who He is, and what type of controls Allah has on us.
