In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allâh has increased their disease. A painful torment is theirs because they use to telling lies. (2:10)

The disease which in order to become "modern" is found today in people's hearts. It develops whenever they see wrong things, for example, if there is any kind of movie, dance party, fashion shows, or any prohibited style of clothing, a person would get involved in those things, and would eventually go deeper and deeper just like an alcoholic. This is the meaning of the verse, because an alcoholic person has a disease, and this is a similar type of situation.

One may ask how are we lying today being a Muslim?

Because our mental mind is fully occupied with the modern way, and in the same time we try to stay Muslims as well. This is lying towards Allah. During the time of the Prophet, there was music, dancing, and all kinds of attractions were available, however if one sees their character and sacrifice towards Islam, those people were known as true Muslims, if we are smart and want to call ourselves Muslim, we should be warned by this verse, and tune up ourselves immediately, before we are approached by the angel of death, and then all of the doors of mercy will be closed.

Note: However the doors of repentance are never closed until death, and we should cry and beg to Allah in order to open our eyes and hearing so we can understand the orders of our creator, sustainer, and our provider, we should always remember that Allah's mercy is more stronger then his punishments, if one tries to seek it within his lifetime, inshallah.
